Clinical Decision Support and Appropriate Use Criteria

Clinical Decision Support and Appropriate Use Criteria
Clinical Decision Support and Appropriate Use Criteria

The Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) program was established by the Protecting Access to Medicare Act (PAMA) of 2014, Section 218(b). The purpose of the program is to help providers ensure they order the most appropriate tests for their Medicare patients by consulting a Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (CDSM). The program’s effective date was January 1, 2017 and, primarily due to stakeholder comments and the COVID pandemic, has been delayed until January 1, 2022. An Educational and Operations testing period began January 1, 2020 and has been extended through calendar year 2021, with no payment consequences during either year.  This first part of this session will focus on core components of the program including services that apply, sites of service that are impacted, and who may conduct the AUC consults.  The second half will address operational issues that are impacting practical implementation.
